Gang,
Last night on my way to DC from Raleigh via I95, I kept losing power intermittently. I pulled into a diesel shop and had them put the SnapOn tool to it. Nothing showing up at all. They put the truck into diag mode and tested all the injectors, etc. Nothing. I left feeling a bit better that it didn't appear to be anything major. Rest of the trip up was fine.
Today ran the truck all over town with no issues. I started heading back and here we go again. about 60 miles into my trip I started feeling the truck lurching and losing power. I looked at the boost gauge and it wouldn't get over 10 pounds. I can barely get up over 60mph. HIlls, forget it! I pulled off at an exit and popped the hood. Can;t see anything wrong, no strange sounds, no whistling, etc. Jumped back on the highway and it ran like a scalded dog for about 25 miles then no boost/no power again. I ran it as long as I could but now and off the highway again at a rest stop. Seems each time I stop, even if it is for a few minutes, it gets right back up and runs great until I get out on the highway.
HELP!!
Gonna grab some beef jerky and RedBull. It's going to be a long night!

Sorry, forgot to add this is a 2011 F550 with the 6.7 and 106K on the clock
Thats what I thought but we scanned it and everything is within spec. The weird thing is this only happens at highway speeds (70mph and up). As soon as I get off the highway and onto a secondary road, I have no problem. I just got off the highway and ran for 30 miles on a 2 lane highway with no problems in boost or maintaining speed, etc. So weird!!!
My icp was doing that without throwing a code lerching and low power... it was barely hanging in enough to keep the light off.. my throttle pos sensor (I think) is giving me the same issues on my 2001 7.3... unplug your icp sensor and see if it has any oil in it or if the icp itself is leaking oil... feel your relays when it does it after you drive for awhile.. if one is hotter than the others replace it. This relay issue also happened to a 96 Chevy 1500 I had. After driving for about 15-20 mins it died and I couldn’t figure it out til I felt around and felt one relay was abnormally hotter than the others... it was the fuel pump relay... good luck bubba be safe watch yourself and fam (if you’re with em) in the rest stops keep close together on the road
Sounds like a fuel supply issue to me. Maybe something in the tank near the fuel pickup? Does fine at low loads but clogs the pickup under sustained higher flow. Thing is, I would expect it to set a DTC for fuel pressure. Hard to diagnose. Reminds me of this article, though: Fuel pickup blockage
All good suggestions. I appreciate them all. Got hom late last night. Going to drop it off at the Ford dealership in the morning and let them bang their head against the wall on it. Ugh.....
Dealership ran the truck and could not replicate the issue. I had them change the fuel filters anyway just to be sure. While the tech was stumped he did a look up and found a TSB on a similar issue. Apparently the PCM needed to be reflashed because of an issue having to do with the turbo and one of the symptoms is loss of boost and power. I pick up the truck tomorrow and will run it up the highway to see if this is the fix. Will keep everyone posted. Thanks to all for the input!
Ok, so the PCM flash didn't fix it. I met with the mechanic at the Ford dealership this morning and he hooked up his PC to the truck. We took a ride down the highway and found that the oil temp was way too high. It should be close to the coolant temp. The coolant temp hovered around 197 degrees. The oil temp hit 264 degrees and the truck went into limp mode. Took it back to the dealership and the mechanic determined that the oil cooler is bad. Going to swap it out next week.
