Chrome door handles

Are the chrome door handles that come with the chrome pkg, overlays (caps), or whats the scoop.?
and in either instance how are they attached, you need to take the handle off the door to remove or install them or what?
*In regards to a 2017/2018-F250/350

Thanks

The chrome door handles, along with the mirrors, are indeed "caps." There was a user on here who successfully removed chrome and installed body color, or vice-versa (can't remember). I believe the door handles do need to come off. Keep in mind the chrome pack comes standard on XLT Premium trucks, but those trucks would not have passive touch access installed in the door handles. Base Lariats do not, either. Also note that Lariat trucks already have body colored door handle surrounds but XLT's do not (unless they are a Premium pack). So there are several different chrome handle options.

They can be swapped (removed and installed) as caps, but cannot be ordered as caps. They can only be ordered as whole assemblies.

To remove, lock doors and lift handle up by the back end. You'll notice the back end is "open". With your fingers, pry apart the top and bottom of the cap at the back end - there are two tabs that will lift over the underlying black handle. It's tough to do - will require a fair amount of force. Once the back end is released, slide forward slightly to release the front.

When reinstalling, get the front seated fully first, then push the back end tabs over the underlying handle. If you don't get the front seated first, they can get stuck.

I was able to swap my silver painted caps with another user's chrome caps.

Going with a Lariat CC with the ultimate pkg which has the keyless start so not sure if they are passive touch or not.
Anyway not much of a chrome person, ive got painted handles/mirror caps/bumpers on my current truck and with going with the lariat for the new truck looks like ill be getting chrome bumpers.
When looking at a truck from the side with the painted handles it almost looks like it needs some chrome to offset the chrome bumpers,
So thought Id do the chrome for something different, problem is, its 1,125 for the pkg and im upgrading to 20 inch wheels so the 18 chrome wheels that come with the chrome pkg are not needed. Dont need the chrome tow hooks and Chrome exhaust tip is debatable. That leaves me with Chrome mirror caps and Chrome Handles for $1125.00.
Not sure I understand the process for removing the caps and where do I get the caps to begin with, Ford?

You will have the passive touch entry on your Lariat Ultimate truck, so make sure you get the handles that have the correct sensor pad on the back and lock thumb pad on the front.

I did not order the chrome pack on my Lariat Ultimate dually for the same reason as you...its a rip-off. If you have a basic truck and you're getting the rims, the package is a little better deal. But on my dually, the rims are the same regardless. I wanted the chrome door handles and chrome exhaust tip...didn't care about the chrome mirrors, bed tie downs, and front tow hooks.

I will mention that the chrome pack gets you better running boards...not just chrome, but physically wider and more solid feeling.

My current 2017 F-250 XLT does have the chrome pack and it dresses that truck up nicely.

The mirror caps, yes - order from Ford. Online you can get the chrome mirror caps for about $40 each (at least this is what I paid back in October). Part numbers for the chrome mirror caps are as follows:
HC3Z17D742CA
HC3Z17D743CA

The door handle caps cannot be ordered individually from Ford. And it's not worth buying the whole door handle as it would set you back at least a couple hundred dollars. Find someone who would want to trade you their chrome for your painted ones. And make sure it's the same model - smart key trucks like the lariat ultimate need the cutouts for the touch pad.
