Hello All,
The ZF-5 in my 92 F-Superduty service truck has gone south.
Will be installing a remanufactured trans this week.
Does anybody know the backlash spec for the PTO unit main gear to the drive gear on the secondary shaft of the transmission.
I remember the procedure from back in the day, but not the amount.
FYI for what it's worth on the ZF go for the higher side of the clearance. The case expands a lot and a cast iron PTO acts like a heat sink. We swapped hundreds of these in the late 90's on service trucks. They always were set to a tight spec and when the trans heated up the gear mesh was dramatically reduced and the area around the pto didn't expand at the same rate and caused cracks to form and gears to bind up, some even pushed the PTO right off the case. I always set to .10 when the transmission is cool at ambient temp. I believe there is a guideline for this in the ZF rebuilders and applications book. I will try to find my old book and see.

Got it set up at .10 on the bench. On the jack and ready to bolt up in the morning.
