I have 460 that I had the machine shop bore to 0.030 over. Well the block came back and each cylinder measures 4.385 exactly.
I checked each with a dial bore gauge. Is this a problem ? My pistons (JE custom forged) fit. I'm concerned the fit might be too tight.
Any thoughts on this issue will be appreciated.
Did you leave the pistons with the machine shop? I always do and each one comes back marked for the hole it goes to. Sounds like you need to do some judicious measuring and clearances will depend on what kind of build it is.
Thanks for your reply. Yes, I had the pistons sent too.
As I said the pistons do fit. I measured each piston, and they all come out to 4.383, so it appears the clearance is 0.002" that seems a tad too tight.
Shouldn't the clearance be around 0.003 - 0.004 ? I mean the pistons are going to expand as the engine warms up AND though forged pistons do expand
uniformly, I think 0.002" doesn't give much room.
Well, the pistons should have come with instructions on what to bore to and then the finish size after honing. I believe my old speed pro power forged pistons were bore to 4.000 and finish home to 4.0025 or 4.003. I don't remember for sure, but I do know it should have had instructions
I did call JE Pistons because mine are custom (I lost the specs sent with the pistons) JE tech support was nice enough to look up my order sheet
and give me the recommended clearance.
