E40D conversion to C6
any complications or guidance on this conversion?
We know we won’t have overdrive and thats fine for our application.
will it just thro trans codes or will it send the engine into open loop mode too?

c6 with a new gear vendor set up. It will actually be more money for the c6/gv option because of the initial set up.
long run is:
no e40d
c6 track record
gv track record
.
Transmission failed while driving. Just stopped moving the truck.
Truck does not move (by pushing) when in park. Meaning the transfer case is good.
No noises from trans in any gear at any time.
Something is broken inside of transmission and the estimate to determine what it is....800$ MINIMUM.
“Estimated” by 2 trans shops in the local area are for stock build and rebuilt standard tc is 3800 Installed 2yr 24 mo warranty.
With the original 1990 case (173k) and no upgrades. Not including any parts that are broken inside and replaced with used parts from other trans on shelf. Can save 600$ to drop and install myself.
mail orders are available for 1800$ and those are not really an option do to the nature of the warranty process.
C6 rebuilt locally by 30 year trans vet is 800 plus tc.
Drive shaft and trans support modification by local 4x4 shop is 500$ With no more than that price guarantee. Maybe less.
Gear Vendor with all the benefits it supplies shipped to my door 3500$. Install chalked up as learning experience so 0$.
Ok, so 1000$ more than an e40d rebuild...maybe...because those are estimates. And we are left with a plain rebuilt e40d.
Track record for the e40d compared to the C6..... really?
These factory overdrive trans are built for the masses where John and Jane Doe are not climbing mountains with loaded
trailers where 40mph is the max limit. And our traffic is always moderate so be aware of slow people reducing any momentum.
Also considering any flatland driving where overdrive is warranted, we will still be able to drive 65 which is speed limit and 55 with a trailer which is the limit.
An overdrive in a tow rig transmission seems to be the weakest set up. Even with a stock motor. Then its 4wd also.
They can be built for good money and nothing is wrong with that. A friend built a 5000$ e40d trans and still blew it up short of 2 years. It’s always happening with them in normal conditions and when we start “working” them...wow. (Probably going to read from someone who has “towed mountains” for 200k on factory tranny and still going strong... but 1 out of 10 is batting 100).
We do not need an overdrive and the GV will be used from 30-55mph. We live in the mountains where those extra gears will be very effective climbing our steep and curvy roads. More so, it seems, than any factory overdrive. Which seems to be taken care of with the GV and the C6 can just do the thing its done for oh so many more years with much higher success than ANY overdrive transmission.... because its not an overdrive transmission. Less to do, fewer components, cheaper to build at any level.
The Gear Vendor can do what its designed to do and has done for many years. The company is still in business and doing very well. It’s an upgrade on any vehicle and sought out for some people. It has great reviews and has its purpose handled with awards.
Anyway, thats the reason and logic at this end. Nothing definite yet. We just found an e40d with 70k for 600$... lol!-)
Nothing at all wrong with the C6 or the Gear Vendor box, but using your own numbers, that's going to add up to $4800.
Last E4OD I rebuilt came in at $1800 and another $600 to R&R in my motorhome. That was 5 years ago and in Canadian dollars. Yes, I used a reputable transmission builder. Included all upgrades and a billet snout converter. By the way, it still works flawlessly.
Have you priced out one directly from Ford? My understanding is that they come in at around $2500 plus installation.
You do know that the E4OD is built around the C6 gearset? I have blown up enough of them to also not be a fan, but the failures are always related to heat. Keep them cool and they are one tough transmission. Track record? I'll take the E4OD please. I probably use them just as hard as anybody else.
Above all else though, this makes no sense?
I'm sure Mark Kovalsky is chuckling to himself right about now.
