I have a 312 v8 in my 1955 f100. The engine had a problem of dropping push rods. I had a problem on number 3 and 8 cylinder. I solved the number 8 exhaust push rod problem. But now number 3 is giving me problems. At first the number 3 intake push rod came off the rocker arm. Then I adjusted the valve clearance and the number 3 intake would hang up and then slam shut. So I put some marvel mystery oil and now the valve opens and closes with no slamming.
The problem I am having is the number 3 intake spring dosnt seem to decompress all the way to full height.. The number 3 push rod disengages from the push rod adjusting bottom stud by a 1/4 inch while rotating the motor. I put more marvel mystery oil and will check later. Hopefully it works. If not should I take off the heads and get the springs checked. Also is there a way to check the springs while the heads are on my motor?
It isn't likely a spring problem, but rather incorrect clearances on the valve stems in the guides. The clearance could be too tight because of varnish, dry from sitting, or new guides not accurately machined (common with offshore parts). The valve guides may need to be reamed, but I'd bet it is more likely just light rust or varnish from sitting.
thanks for the information. I kind of thought it might be varnish. main reason is as soon as I put marvel mystery oil things got better. i will keep adding and turning motor over by hand and checking. But you know prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
