2001 7.3 Issue

Patient:
2001 F250 7.3 PSD/w 220K miles, AT, 4x4 Supercab, well maintained, original owner here. This vehicle is my first and only diesel I've ever owned. Although in my younger years, I have done major repairs on gasoline engines, this truck has never required anything other than oil and filter (oil, fuel, tranny, etc.) changes, and the occasional PITA sensor replacement. For the most part it has run excellent until now. EDIT: Oh, and she isn't smoking.

Symptoms:
- Idiot light says "Service Engine Soon."
- Starts fine.
- If it were a gasoline engine, I would say it has a slight "miss" when idling.
- While driving, she appears to run almost normal until she shifts into 3rd gear, and then the power drops off substantially, with slight shaking or shuddering.

When this issue came about, I parked the truck immediately.

What say ye you experts?

You need to be able to find out what the fault codes are, do you have access to a code scanner?
One option is Forscan, Forscan is a downloadable software for Windows that will talk to these old trucks, you just need an OBD adapter, I purchased the OBDLink SX USB cable for about 30 dollars on Amazon, to connect to my laptop.

if you can pull the fault codes, you can post them back here and others with much more online troubleshooting experience will be able to give you some guidance.

Thanks for that info.

Don't have a scanner, but can borrow, and yes, that was on the to-do list. Just thought I'd throw it out here first as a preemptive strike, and to gain a consensus.

It really could be a myriad of things. But, without the DTC's we won't have a direction to follow. Also, the Scantool you use should be capable of PWM Bi-Directional Communications to retrieve all stored DTC's i.e. PCM, TCM, IDM

Agreed, need codes for a direction in which to turn.
