Can DTC Codes be pulled without a code reader?

Can DTC Codes be pulled without a code reader?
Just wondering if there is a key-on/key-off sequence for an '01 7.3 PSD that will show any DTCs on the odometer? Or do you have to have a AutoEnginuity or something similar to pull the codes?
I've had a few other vehicles that you could do this on. Not having any trouble now, just thought I'd put it in my notebook if there was a key-on/off sequence that works.
