Hey all. I have a 2000 4.0 4x4 Ranger that I'm interested in turning into a complete project truck. It's been sitting for a couple months now, as I've gotten a new truck, but I think it'd make a great project vehicle. It does need some serious tlc, with suspension, both complete axles, and possibly the radiator support. I don't know how difficult the conversion would be on the electrical side of things, such as a new pcm, and all the steering column wiring switchovers. With luck I can find a complete donor truck I'm assuming will also need to be a 4.0 4x4. Need all the tips and info I can get, Thanks😉

78 reads but no replies & I'm not completely clear on what you have & what you want to convert it to??? I see it's a 2000 4.0 4X4 but does it have a manual or auto tranny & which way, or how are you thinking of converting it?
Guess I was a little vague on the description. Currently it's an automatic, and I'm interested in swapping it out for a manual transmission, depending on how difficult it may be. my biggest goal is to take this existing truck and turn it into something fun and dependable that I can learn to drive stick on, without the hassle of just buying another vehicle. I'm not set on costs yet, as this is still just an idea I'm trying to get feedback on.
Buying another truck already equipped with a standard would be far less of a hassle than converting yours from an automatic to a standard. I would not suggest that you even attempt this feat without first having a complete donor truck of the same year and model as yours at your disposal. Literally everything from the frame cross member to the clutch peddle will have to be swapped out. You should do a lot of research on the topic first and get yourself some repair manuals. You will need lots of specialty tools and a transmission jack. I have done this before, but it was on a 1964 Ford car, well before the age of electronics and on board computers. The newest vehicle that I have ever had any transmission swapping experience with was a 1988 F-150 and then we only swapped from a 5 speed to a 4 speed manual.
