Is there a way to test the tach sensor? I just added a tach and sensor from a donor vehicle and wired it into my 83 F350 6.9. The tach doesn't work and I'd like to rule out the sensor without buying a new one.
Tach is not working at all, I'm trying to troubleshoot it, looking for a test procedure for the sensor so I can rule it out. I have checked the wiring and it matches the schematic. I may have to but a new sensor to test it.
Ok I thought about this a bit, it's just an inductive pickup so I hooked up my DMM which has a frequency setting, and I'm getting 700 Hz at idle. Hz is cycles per second so X60 for cycles per minute 42000 divided by 53 (teeth on the pump gear divided by 2) which gives me 792 RPM cold so I'm calling the sensor good. now on to the tach.
Stupid question, bpimm. Does the sensor simply read impulses from the stock IP gear? In other words, the gear on a truck equipped with a tachometer is the same as the gear on my tachometer-less truck? I'm hoping to find a tach and sensor one of these days, a nice little upgrade project.

You are correct, same gear just add the sensor and tach and wire together.
I looked for about a year locally for the tach and never found one then I posted a parts wanted request on Row 52 and a puller contacted me when he found one. He wanted $125.00 for all the parts and shipping so I sent him $150 to cover paypal fees and a bit of a tip. Just happy to get it.
Next week I'm heading over to my brothers place, he has way more electrical test gear than I do, and see if the tach works. When I hook up the tach and look at the sensor signal it doesn't show the frequency like it does with the sensor unplugged. I don't know if the tach is loading it down and killing the output completely or if it's just enough so my meter can't trigger on it. At his place we can scope the sensor to see just what kind of signal we are looking at and test the tach to see if it will work on a bench created waveform.
