My 87 F250 turned 500,000 last week. The steering is getting a bit sloppy. The play seems to be coming from the lower part of the steering column. I believe the part I need is the collapsible section that goes between the upper column and the steering box. I think it is Ford P/N 3B676. Naturally, Ford has declared this part obsolete. Does anyone know where one might be or has anyone come up with a replacement? This is a tilt column and manual transmission on the floor.
Thanks,
Dave
unfortunately the coupler between the upper and lower column was never offered as a for sale item.
if the spring steel clip breaks, the bushing will fall out or sometimes slide up in the column causing about 1/8 turn play in the steering wheel. what i do is go to a junk yard and buy another column. if it is in better shape than the column in the truck, i will just put the newer column in. if the one in the truck is better, i will remove the bushing and clip from the junkyard column and put then it in the one in the truck.
it is a pain in the butt to do, but once installed properly the play in the steering is gone.
i always look for a good column first, but with the newest of these columns being at least 27 years old now, it is getting a bit hard to find a good column.
Thanks Tom. I guess I'll have to add that to my shopping list next time I get to the boneyard. Problem is that there are not many of these old trucks left with any worthwhile parts.
