Drivetrain Clunk

My 1996 F-250 has a clunk somewhere in the drivetrain. It’s only when you let off the gas, also if you are slowing down and you give it all little gas and let off there is a very noticeable clunk. It really feels like a bad u-joint, but i have put it in neutral and grabbed the drive shaft and can’t feel any play.

Check for slop in the rear axle. If the truck is 4x4 check the rear output of the transfer case. My old 1992 F350 4x4 had a worm bushing at the rear of the transfer case.

I had an '87 with a 6.9 (came with a wife, so I didn't know its history) When I started driving it, I could have swore it had a bad motor mount. Good friend, retired mechanic, did a lot of work on F250 diesels, said it could be the dual mass flywheel, and he was probably right, as I never found anything that could cause it, and the wife and truck left before I had to do something with it.

Don't know if a '96 has the dual mass.

Don’t know if 96s have dual flywheel either, but the clunk in mine I pretty sure is somewhere between the tranny and the wheels

you can have a bad universal and not feel or see it.
the only way to really tell if a universal is bad is to drop the drive shaft and inspect the needle bearings inside the cups.

Yah I am beginning to think it’s my ujoints, when you put it into drive there is a slight pause and clunk when it finally goes into gear. Feels a lot like my dodge which I know has bad joints.

99% of the time it is the rear u joint. but like said above, check the rear differential too. a lot of times the pinion bearings will get a little loose and cause a clunk when put in gear/brakes applied.
