Fuel Economy with newer motor

Fuel Economy with newer motor
Hi, so I have a 2001 Expedition with a 4.6L from a 2004. It runs great, as I just did the number 8 coil pack and both front wheel bearings.
I need to do the negative battery terminal today after work.
However, my question is: would going to the newer, fresher motor cause a hit on MPG? I'm getting roughly 11 MPG now, and with the old motor even with a blown head gasket I was getting near 20.
I am going to do the PCV and clean the MAF as well as the terminal when I get home. Is there anything else I should look into, or by going to a newer motor did I inherit more power but less MPG?

With my old 98 expedition, I was lucky to see 16mpg hwy, and roughly 11-12 mpg city, I’d love to know how it would have ever got 20mpg. My 06 Navigator, I’m lucky to get 16mpg hwy, and 10mpg city. The engines should have both been the PI heads, so why the drop in mpg is kind of boggling. I wish I had an answer, but without scan data, I can’t see anyth8ng being different.

dont drive like a horny teenager, stick to the speed limit, avoid rush hour traffic. all I can say. lol ...best ive averaged is 22mpg out to vegas. which is DEFINITELY not bad for something with the aerodynamics of a brick.
I just figure 11mpg is quite a bit lower than it should be.....thats about what my old lifted F150 on 315s got. I should have kept that LOL!

Hehe I learned to stop looking at the pump while fueling a long time ago.
11 mpg isn't that bad on these trucks, but it's not the best either. If I noticed a sudden drop in fuel economy I'd do the usual stuff, check filters, clean MAF, clean throttle body etc. Then check the fuel trims with an OBD scantool. If the fuel trims are way off, then something is going on. If they're bang on, then that suggests that everything is honkey dorey. You could also reset the PCM, disconnect the battery and short the battery cables for a few mins and see if there's a change in fuel economy as it relearns the parameters. Not sure if the fuel economy is so much better on a newer Expedition than an older, but they are a bit more efficient, giving you a lot more power for the same fuel.
