Yeah, big thick tube made like most tubes I think. On '78 and '79 trucks, the c-bushing pad and all that junk at the end were cast as one piece, rather than the previous years where the pads were welded to the outer skin of the tube.
The tubes can, and regularly are welded to with no trouble. I'm sure there are tricks to doing it right, but they should be easy to find. The tube even on our 1/2 ton 44's is probably 3/8" thick at least. Certainly no less than 1/4" I wouldn't think.
