I just realized something, I forgot to change my fuel filter and it's been more than 10000 miles since the last time I changed it. Before anyone decides to say it, I will, shame on me. That explains why I've been getting such low gas mileage. Before I got between 16.5 and somewhere close 18 around town and on the freeway. I'm guessing that now I get about 13.5 to about 15. I filled the tank to about the 1/4 mark and in 2 days it's gone. Usually that will hold me for about 3 1/2 or 4 days max. But anyhow, autozone sells the "Deutsch" brand. But is it any good? If not, what brand should I use and where can I get it?

But them by the case at the International Truck Parts Counter. They come 12 to a case, in plastic bags with o-ring. I keep a spare duct taped to the side of my battery. Then if I get some really bad fuel while traveling then I have one ready to install.

Fuel Filter

A new fuel filter will not necessarily return those missing mpg. It may, but if you get good clean fuel, the filter can go further than you've run it without adverse effect. If you get water and algae in your fuel, you'll be changing the filter 4 times a day until you get it cleared out. The best bet is to have the new filter in one hand when you take the old one out, and compare the colors. They should start white and progress through tan, brown and then almost black as dirt accumulates. You want to change it long before you reach black.
Do you have gauges? If so, has your boost pressure dropped along with the mileage? Are the EGT's staying the same? Gauges make excellent diagnostic tools for keeping your engine at top performance, as well as a safety check on our right feet. I hope the new filter does it for you, but I have my reservations on that. Let us know.
I don't have a guages on my X just yet, but I do plan on getting them once I have a chip or an exhaust system installed. I can bet you're right about the quality of my diesel becuase I've been filling up at a Diamond Shamrock that a few, but not too many diesels (not big rigs) fill up at. The local diesels don't consume enough diesel to warrant fresh diesel being brought in daily. I normally try to fill up alongside the big rigs. That way I almost always get "fresh" diesel. What else could adversely affect my mileage and how do I change the fuel filter? I know the procedure is explained in the manual, but I want to hear about user experiences while changing it. I.E.: How someone else did it.
if you go up to the top and hit search for fuel filter in the 7.3L forum, you will find several threads with the instructions about how to change them... many of the "knowledgeable" guys here put their imput in on those threads...worth checking out.
good luck with it and remember to put the seal on the right direction!
Gentlemen, I appreciate all of your help. I'll keep every detail in mind. I do, however, have one question. What kind of fuel filter would you all recommend? I know Ggg6 already gave his input on this, but I'd like to hear from the rest of you and anyone else who would like to post. No offense to anyone, but after all, not everybody may agree with Ggg6 on his recommendations. Once I get a general idea as to what I should get, I'll post and get some opinions on it. Thanks in advance.
I read the comment on the fuel filter change and that it might effect the mpg. I also saw the comment on cleaning the fuel strainer. What is it and where is it. I have changed my fuel filter before but never cleaned the fuel strainer
