I have not bought a jug of DEF in several years. I have several stations within a reasonable distance that sell DEF at the pump and after I fill up the diesel, I restart the pump and fill up the DEF. ( have to reinsert your Debit card and select the other product) I have no idea what brand of DEF they sell. And it's never been an issue.,
Be aware that some DEF pumps have magnets that need to detect metal before they will start to run. The plastic filler on our trucks will not trigger the magnet, So you need an adapter ( most stations with this kind of pump have one behind the counter if you ask). The station I frequent don't have this type of pump and work great with our trucks. So don't be surprised if you can't get the DEF pump to run, It may be one of the older types of pumps with that safe guard
I've got one. Although, I haven't needed it once on my 2017. I'm wondering if the filler neck is different on the 17's or are the stations doing away with the maglock? I know the need is regional and some areas don't have the magnetic locking nozzles but I swear that some stations that needed the Magnevator on my 2012 don't with my 17....
The goofs of DEF in the diesel or vice versa is why i buy it by the jug and never open both the DEF or fuel cap at the same time. I pull away from the pumps before I add DEF. I also have a locking diesel cap so unlocking the fuel cap is an intentional act and not a mistake.
Hey Larry, if you don't mind me asking...
Is this the cap you use for your truck? I've been looking for one.
I don't fuel up at trucking stations but I can definitely see the potential to screw up with getting fuel AND Def at the same time. I usually buy DEF on sale wherever and put it in the Ford factory bottle with the factory nozzle so I don't overfill.

I saw your post after making my first post, Rodney. Thanks for that. I'll probably buy one to put in the truck in case down the line when I have a camper and we're on the road, I can fill up with DEF at a truck stop if need be.

I've not found a truck stop / station in CT that offers DEF at the pump. For those that have used the DEF at the pump, how well does the tank fill? You can't just stick a funnel in the DEF filler neck and pour it in so curious how the pump works. The other thing is that I've read in a bunch of places not to add DEF until the truck tells you to. Regularly adding DEF can throw the fluid level sensor off. Never experienced that, I always wait for the 500 mile warning.
As far as the 2.5 times faster, I have a frothing issue pumping the diesel in that quickly. Given the tiny fuel tanks on these things I'm one of those "squeeze as much as you can in" kinda persons. Heck, I've even grabbed my wheel well and shaken the truck to get the air out of my fuel tank.
I fill my DEF when it hits around half way. I don't want to have to carry DEF with me into the mountains when I'm towing. I've had no issues with the tank level on my 2017. It takes it a couple minutes to register and then it's OK.
I've only twice seen the 500 miles to empty. in 8 years of driving 6.7L trucks I fill it when I think about it, and I m at a station with a pump. Usually it it takes 3 maybe 4 gallons.
So I really doubt it matters to the DEF tank if it is tells you it needs DEF or is still half full.
I usually fill in early November and leave it alone all winter so I don't over fill in cold weather
My dealer fills the DEF tank for a small cost at each oil change. I purchase a case of DEF from them and they toss the un-used bottles in the back. When I remember, I top it off after I get some mileage on the truck's oil change. I don't keep the tank packed full in Winter due to freezing. I do top off and don't wait for the reminder but some here believe that this is very incorrect.
When I purchased my first 6.7L truck in 2012, I thought about DEF a lot. Without a thread here, I never think about it these days.
