DEF brands

I recently purchased a my 2018 6.7 coming from a 6.4 So far I can say I’ve been very happy with the 6.7. It’s quiet and puts out as much power as my deleted 6.4 without the head pounding noise of the exhaust while towing. One of the things I’m trying to wrap my head around is DEF and the different brands. Peakblue seems to be the choice of DEF used by many owners. While I don’t mind following suit, I’m open to other brands. While at Meijer last night I seen a brand called “Cleardef” for $7.89 for a 2.5 gallon jug. Not that I want to go cheap but if there’s no harm saving a little sure. From what I read, “In order for something to be called a Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) the product must meet the following criteria:
Must meet ISO 22241—Which is an international standard that defines the quality requirements for DEF including production, storage and distribution. The production, handling and transportation of DEF is governed by the ISO 22241 standards.”
Is All Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) the Same?
Here’s a pic of the Def.

Yup! DEF is DEF. As long as it has the certification. Use it and enjoy your 6.7 beast!

I use Wal Mart DEF at $7.88 a 3.5 gallon container. No problems.

Glad I don't have to worry about those boxes any longer. The fuel station across the street from my house sells bulk DEF at the pump and it'ss so much easier.

Me too. (It's 2.5 gallons though... ;) ) It's a great deal...

Find a Truck stop that has it at the pump. so much easier and cheaper yet.
Good luck.

I have yet to buy diesel or DEF at a truck stop. Do they use the same nozzle for both diesel and DEF. My dad said he had to purge the line when switching from diesel to DEF. That sounds like a situation prime for contamination of the fuel. So I'm sceptical.

System 03-17-2018 11:01 AM

No, it’s a separate nozzle. You couldn’t use the same hose and nozzle for both without contamination. The DEF nozzle and hose are generally behind a plastic roll up door to avoid confusion or mistakes...

Separate nozzle and separate product selection button. Handle is blue in color and hidden behind a rubber door/flap. The diameter of the spout is smaller than a standard fuel nozzle and just barely fits into the DEF tank fill neck. Another benefit of fueling at a truck island is the fuel flow rate is 2-3 times faster than the auto diesel pumps. The stock tank fills in like 60 seconds.

My dad is around 76 years old and has MS. When I saw him a week ago he reeked of diesel but claimed it was DEF. Um, I may be new to diesel trucks but I can easily smell the difference between DEF and diesel. He goofed something and didn't want to fess up.

System 03-17-2018 04:09 PM

As long as it's on him and not in the wrong tank Jim. There are goofs and then there are mistakes. I'd rather hear about him goofing something up than making a mistake! Tide can get the goof out... ;)

HRTKD 03-17-2018 04:17 PM

Oh, he already had his fuel system replaced once. His truck looks like it was the runner up at the local smash-up derby. At one point both bumpers fell off.

As an added bonus, it is delicious and nutritious!

The goofs of DEF in the diesel or vice versa is why i buy it by the jug and never open both the DEF or fuel cap at the same time. I pull away from the pumps before I add DEF. I also have a locking diesel cap so unlocking the fuel cap is an intentional act and not a mistake.
