Hey all,
I'm new to the forum here.. I am rebuilding the 460 motor out of my grandfathers 1978 F-250. I dismantled the motor probably about 3 years ago, and have everything bagged and tagged; however, when I came to reinstall the timing chain cover and water pump, I am unsure of the positioning of the bolts since they are different lengths.. Does anyone have a diagram or know of the correct bolt pattern / positions.?

Thank you.
I looked in the 1978 Ford Truck shop manual. It describes the removal & installation of the front cover and water pump, but has no diagram to indicate which bolts go where. If you made no record during removal, you'll probably have to measure the depth of each hole to where the thread starts and match them to the bolts. If any of the threads are into a water passage and require sealant, be sure to use it upon assembly. The manual says that torque should be 12-18 Ft.-Lbs.
]Just finished a new waterpump on my 460 engine two days ago.
heres a post i found before
"Just because I couldn't find a post with this information the other day, I thought I would list the bolts needed to install the timing cover & water pump. I'm using a factory cover and a Murray mechanical water pump.
List of 5/16"x 18 thread pitch bolts
6- 4" long (water pump)
5- 1.5" long (water pump)
2- 2" long (bottom of TC)
1- 1" long (left side, above bottom bolt)
1- 2.5" long (next to fuel pump)
Fuel pump bolts are 3/8"x 16 thread pitch bolts. Need 2 of them, 1.25" long.
Hope it saves somebody a trip to the store"
that being said, while i was in there i could swear there were only two sizes of bolt i dont think i saw 4 different lengths. Water pump bolts are 4 inches and 1.5 inches
the bottom left long bolt , the one that is by the alternator bracket, definitely 100% goes into a water jacket and needs thread sealer. I just put thread sealer on all the threads of all the long bolt just in case any others did the same, and also anti seize on the body of all the long bolts so they will never try to stick to the aluminum timing cover in the future.
I read on another Ford forum that pipe sealer is really what you want, if those bolts thread into coolant passages.
Maybe pipe sealer on the threads, and antiseize on the shank of the bolt, which stays 'in' the cover? That can be a big problem on SBF 5.0s when those bolts seize.

ya, I bought permatex "thread sealer" (NOT Loctite) that is made with PTFE to seal against liquid. Probably the same stuff as pipe sealer. I think some people use teflon tape, but I figured I'd use the more traditional approach
As an Engine rebuilder, I was trained, bolts need 3/8 to 1/2 inch contact to hold torque, Put bolt in the hole and see how much sticking out without starting bolt. Will get you close to correct length.
