Can some break down the difference that I would hear from a 40 and 50 series FM muffler? I'm looking for a louder rubbling sound in my 03 Explorer Sport Trac, but don't want to get a headache everytime I go onto the highway.
This may sound stupid but how load are these things when your driving on the highway 65 mph + ?? Please tell me that you are still able to carry on a conversation with your girlfriend or at least enjoy your music, hahah?
i have a 40 series in my full size Bronco and i can only realy hear anything when im on it or crusing at a low speed.with the catalytic converters restricting alot of sound, and im sure you have single exaust.now in my 64, i can hear a big difference im runnin duals straight back and i get sound alday in my cab at any speed.id say if your realy concernd with interior resonation then go with the 50 or any other then the 40.but the 40 will give a bit more power from my experience. just my $.02
I have a question about this too. I have a '77 with a 302 and headers and other aftermarket goodies. I'm looking to go with flowmaster mufflers. I want a nice deep throaty sound but not too loud in the cab (gotta be able to hear the expensive sound system & talk to my girl). I went to flowmaster's website and they had sound clips of each muffler, and the 40 sounded the best, but I'm afraid it will be too loud-no catalytic conv. Also should I dump them off right in front of the axle or should I run duals out the rear. Right now I have two mufflers we cut from our '66 stang dumped off (we think they came from a big bus or something).
If you dump in front of the axles you will get a lot of interior sound. If you run pipes the sound will be directed more to the rear. 40 series really isn't that loud...depending on what u think is loud....and remember: it's only loud if you're old or married
I'm running 50 series (52556) with 2 1/2" and x-pipe behind a 393 (500 horse) stroker in a 69 F100. Interior sound is perfect; not to overpowering but noticable. If you have converters go with 40's, if true dual then 50's.
try magniflow, sound good and not really loud depending on what lenght you get. and it really make a V6 sound good. and will flow better than a flowmaster, giving you a little extra hp.
the loudness on the highway depends on your rear end gear ratios. I have a 3.73 on my bored out 350 engine in my 78 camaro and it is pretty loud on the highway. This is without overdrive. With overdrive u should idle lower on the highway and there will be less noise. I know flowmaster 40 series sound very nice but are not too loud, but hey will get u noticed. Flowmaster 30 series are loud as all ****. I was talkign to a guy at a gas station who had a 97 cobra with 30 series and damn! It was real loud. So ther eu go if that helps =)
