1977 300 I6 Idle speed/ valve train noise

combining 2 things into one thread

1: based on video, is my idle speed appropriate? I don’t have a tach to hook up and was hoping someone could chime in about whether it seems close

2: the valves make a rather strong rattle, any guesses as to what’s going on? Is this the “sounds like a diesel” phrase that I see on other videos of the 300 6?

The exhaust is also straight piped with a glass pack so some of the noise you hear is due to an unrestricted exhaust in the video

I think the idle is a little high and the clicking sound is greater on the exhaust side... exhaust leak?

Exhaust leak will be especially noticeable when under load, accelerating up a hill for example. Idle RPM might be a little high, can set it wherever you like. Just so it doesn't stall on the one hand, and doesn't launch the truck when put into gear on the other. Somewhere in between there is fine it's up to you really.

Try some Marvel oil in the gas and oil to quiet noisy lifters and sticky valves. Good preventive maintenance on older engines just waking up.

may be a good idea to do an oil change, maybe pull off your valve cover and take a took at the top of your head. mine was sludged up so it wasn't circulating oil well. all that takes is a gasket. idle sounds a little high, and its not uncommon to have an exhaust leak on an old 300 but that sounds like more of a valve train noise than an exhaust leak.
