Have a 1951 F1 V8. Converted to 12 volt. Just replaced the generator and resistor. Polarized correctly. Battery charged, but still will not start; won't even turn over. Did I toast my starter in this process? Any suggestions. Appreciate it.
Highly unlikely. A 6V starter can stand the occasional 12V burst many times. Most People even do not bother to change the 6V starter when converting to 12V. Maybe bad battery contacts? And you might try to touch with 12V directly to the starter bypassing the Solenoid and see if it tries to engage at all.
Check your points....I had that happen after it was sitting ...stupid me who is fairly good auto mechanic...totally overlooked it and forgot about the points...I am so used to the new stuff firing right up....
I have a 53 M100 flat head powered on 12 volts and had the starter lock up on the flywheel, it didn`t make a sound and wouldn`t turn over. I loosened the starter and had a hard time to get it off the flywheel but once I did and put it back on the engine fired right up. 6 v starters lead a pretty hard life on spinning on 12 v.
