hey guys i have a 94 f150 4.9 6cyl and it wont start. i though it was the battery but when i got a jump it wouldnt turn over every time i turn the key it makes one click. not the sputtering like the solenoid just one click and a dim of the interior lights....is my starter shot? i went to tap the starter and still got nothing. throughout the day the truck wasnt turning over to its full potential maybe the starter just crapped out?
let me know

If the battery terminals and all the connections are clean and tight, including grounds, it almost has to be in the starter or solenoid. Based on what you said about it not spinning like it should I'd say you have a bad starter. The click is your solenoid kicking in.
Does it spin better cold than when it's hot? classic symptom of a starter if it does.
The click is the relay on the fender.
The lights dimming and not going out says you have one of the following:
1. A weak or bad battery.
2. Loose starter bolts and cocked starter.
3. Locked engine.
I had the same problem, it turned out that my Ignition coil & module were both dead. The Coil is on the engine under your power steering pump, and the module is on the firewall beside the battery.
yeah idont think thats the problem though. cause it was running just fine it wasnt really a problem with spark or ignition. just a slow starter that maybe finally crapped out on me
hey guys i just turn the ignition on and touched a screwdriver from the positive terminal and the tiny ternimal on the start solenoid and the solenoid sputtered but no movement to the starter
found out the click was coming from the starter solenoid. pulled it off bought a new one still clicking when i turn the key its one click. is it defiantly my starter?
i dont want to pull the starter if i dont need to but i think ihave to
Check the cable that goes from the + post of the battery to the starter solenoid, and no, I'm not talking about the starter relay on the fender. One cable goes there, the other goes straight to the starter. I had the OE cable fail INSIDE the clamp on the battery, and had EXACTLY the same symptom. Relay would click, solenoid would clunk, but no rotation. There was no discoloration or any indication that the cable was broken inside the clamp. It may look perfectly good, but the only way to check it is with an ohmmeter. If it's the original starter, though, chances are, it's getting in bad shape from age and use. It may not hurt to have another handy if the cable is OK. BTW, make sure you disconnect those cables while you're testing, especially the battery end. There's a lot of energy waiting to make a huge mess, if not hurt you seriously. Take the - cable off first, then the + cable(s), at the battery. If you take the one off the starter first, that end could be energized, and risk explosion from the battery if you accidentally ground it. Let us know how it turns out.
If he is calling the relay the solenoid then he may have a bad spade terminal at the solenoid down on the starter. He would need to cut back an inch of wire and crimp on a new spade connector. Sometimes you can wiggle the spade terminal and get it to start a few more times.
hey guys
thanks alot for the help
took the old starter out brought it to autozone they tested it and it failed the gear wouldnt even spin it was locked up
dropped a 100 bucks and got a new one works great
