00 excursion clutch packs

I have a 00 excursion and the limited slip is chattering when I turn, so i figure it is time to replace the clutch packs. My question is I see that my diff could be a dana or a sterling, how do i tell which one? I can't find any numbers on the diff. My 2nd question is some clutch packs have 2 dog ears on them and some 3, is there a way to tell which i have without tearing the diff apart and then ordering? My 3rd and final question is there a better aftermarket clutch pack out there then the stock ones?

Well, I can help with one of your questions.........all EXs came with the Sterling rear axle and all the 4X4 ones had Dana 50 fronts.

The rear is a Ford/Sterling 10.5 and uses a 3 pinion carrier, I don't think there are any aftermarket clutches available for the 3 pinion design, when you rebuild it you can add .015-.020" of shims to each side to tighten it up. I rebuilt mine last summer and added .035" to each side which ended up turning it into a spool, I ran it that way for a few months then ended up pulling it out and Throwing a Detroit Locker in there. The carrier is a two piece design so it is pretty easy to replace the clutches in. Here is a good video of how it works, also you don't have to remove the ring gear from the carrier to rebuild it, not sure why they did that in the video.

Or you could add some friction modifier to see if that works, it did for me.

I don't think friction modifier will help, all it does is make the clutches slip more, when you rebuild one you are supposed to leave the friction modifier out and add as needed.

Some Excursions shipped with a 10.25 sterling rear. They just grabbed whatever off the shelf and slapped it in. It was either 10.5 or 10.25 with either 3.73 LS or open.

I ended up with a 10.25 rear and a 3.73 open.

75w140 is nice, but the better way that I've found works better is 85w140 with a little friction modifier. The clutches seem to grab better and the rear diff is alot happier with the thicker oil. 75w140 more often than not comes with friction modifier built in. This is why people say that with 75w140 the limited slip doesn't grab when they need it to. With 85w140, there is not friction modifier built in and you have control over how much friction modifier goes in.

Did your 10.25 have drum brakes? I don't think ford ever put disc brakes on a 10.25, and they all had the 8x6.5 bolt pattern not a 8x170 like the 99+ ones did, also the carriers from the ford 10.5 and 10.25 are the same.

When they did the gear swap for my 35s they said for some reason the 10.5 kit didn't work. They pulled my VIN used a 10.25 install kit and it worked like it should. My truck was born October 6th, 2000 and has disc brakes all around.
