Hi any information on 1999 Ford Ranger 3lt xlt I need to replace the cam sync but Ineed to find tdc, are there marks on the crank balancer and would they be seen or lined up from above looking down and would it be correct to fit the cam sync when at No 1 tdc or degrees before or after tdc..
Ps. Im in the UK so finding advice over here is impossible.
When I replaced mine on my 3.0 I did not bother to find TDC !!! I removed the cam position sensor so I could see the vain that spins to activate the sensor. The vain is right on top easy to see right under sensor. I got a friend to spin the engine by socket and watched the vain till i got it in a position that was easy to remember,,,in my case I had it a 6 O'Clock and removed old sync and installed new one with vain at 6 O 'Clock and it fired right up and ran great !!!! I can find the TDC info if you want to do it that way ..

Yes I did the same installed the the synchronizer but becausethe teeth of the old unit had all but dissappeared I must ave installed it a tooth out of sync,so now have to find tdc and fit it in again that way and to use the proper ford tool. I just cant find any tdc marks on the crankshaft balancer pulley.
Sorry yes, a 3.0 xlt flex fuel 1999 Ranger, Im assuming that I will have to find tdc using something like a screwdriver or a straw inserted in number one cylinder and set the cam syncronizer using the alignment cap tool, I just wish I could find info on whether there are tdc marks on the crankshaft pulley or ballancer or where else to consider.
Thanks for the comments appreciate it, here in the uk our Ford dealers havent a clue on American engines.
On the Harmonic balancer there is a tiny dotted line mark if memory serves ,, very hard to see and covered with dirt and oil,,,if memory serves there is a triangle shaped mark on the cover next to crank sensor and it times in 10 degrees out i think,,,but let me double check that,,,,will have to hunt down where sync tool points
yeah, its on the balancer but will probably be hard to find. a flashlight held at an angle will help you locate them. Then a scrubby pad if they dont pop out with just the flashlight. Once you find them some white paint dabbed on will make it much easier when doing actual timing stuff.
Thankyou for the comments and the Video just waiting for the Cam sensor Synchronizer alignment tool to arrive here from Rockauto then I will get on with it. Cheers.
Hi
Had the cam syncronizer / sensor tool arrive and still hadnt found any timing marks or pointer on the crankshaft pulley and balancer. So to get tdc I found compression on number 1 cylinder using a vacuum gauge then using a cheap endoscope stuck it just into the spark plug hole saw the piston coming towards me then retreating while turning the engine via the alternator pulley with all plugs out with a ratchet, got TDC spot on so the job is a good one.
