I'm getting ready to order up new rubber for my project. What I'm looking for is original look 'pie crust' rubber in 16x6, blackwalls.
Can someone tell me which brand they used and are happy with?
And do you run tubes or tubeless?
I was thinking of staying with bias plies.
Thanx,
Kirk
I have Excelsior's on my 54 F100. They are bias ply. They have the pie crust look. I am pleased with them. The tire shop says new bias plies are better than they were years ago. I had radials on my 54 from 1999 to about 4 years ago. They rode nice, made bumps smoother but we're very very hard to turn the wheel when parking, backing, or going very slow. I'll post pictures when I get to my desktop.
I'm running Firestone 650x16s on the F1 and will have 600x16 Ford scripts on the 46 project car - both bias ply tubed tires. Good pie crust on both and zero handling issues with the F1 for the past 5 years.
My only caution would be to try to find an experienced house to do the mounting. After a few ruined tubes, I resorted to doing the mounting myself - I'll have my guy just do the balancing.
Abe, one of the things I love about your truck, and others on this forum, is that in black and white (minus the soccer *****) this picture could have been taken in any decade. From 1950s to 2010s.
I'll second what Forty-Niner said about finding an experienced shop to mount your tires. I'm running 6:50 X16 bias tires with tubes. Two of the tubes developed leaks because there was a problem with how they were installed. The shop that did the work does lots of work for farmers and said they were familiar with rims needing tubes, but I had trouble anyway.

Thanks, Ken. That's my plan. To keep the truck, to the best of my ability and wallet, the way it was when grandpa had it.
The tires I purchased from a Coker dealer were manufactured by the Tornel Tire Company. They were not as expensive as some of the options I considered, but still not cheap. The reviews I looked at were mostly positive. Good luck with your decision.
Based on past threads, most any tire other than a 650x16 is going to be a problem with your under bed carrier. The width of the tire is the issue. This makes sense to me as the 650s are a snug fit.
