OBDII Reader for OBDI?

Will an OBDII reader work on a 99, with an OBDI port?

It will not. Plug is physically different. You can still by the old ODB1 readers, though.

Is it the same plug ? A lot of these heavy trucks are not obd2 compliant but still work.

The premise for the original question is mistaken, there is no OBDI plug on a 99 SD. A 99 Super Duty will have an OBDII electrical interface, not OBD1. However, unless the truck was a "green state" version from the factory, it will be running an OBDI calibration on the OBDII hardware platform

So the, correct answer is "Yes, the OBDII reader will work just fine since the 99 does NOT have an OBDI plug."

That's what I thought. It's probably the same as it is on my 2001. IT has the same connector as OBD2 yet is not calibrated the same as for trucks sold in California. Used to have one of those too.
Hence why I asked if the connector is the same. Other people spewing mis-information on here.

Let's try this. Will an OBDII reader work on a 99 F250 SD V10?
Will it read any codes, or do I need to do something else?

Yes.

All Cars and light trucks built and sold in the United States after January 1, 1996 were required to be ODBII equipped.

OBDII - On-Board Diagnostic's System - Does My Car Have OBD-II? The Connector and Communications.

OBDI connector looks like this and is usually located under the hood near the brake master cylinder.

An easy way to verify is to take it to autozone or o'reillys and ask them to scan it. It's free.
