Got caught in a snow storm and the snow started covering up the mirrors. So I turned on the heated mirror switches and they stayed on maybe 5 minutes, then turned off. Turned them back on and they stayed on maybe 2 minutes, then shut off. Then they would not come on at all. And they did not do much to take the ice off the mirrors. Is that normal ---or is there some kind of operator error on my part, that I am doing? They seem kind of useless---can there be something wrong with them or is that the way they work? Read the manual but they said very little about them. Any info would be appreciated!
I'm honestly not aware of a heated mirror switch...maybe I'm missing something. On my '06 which had Factory heated mirrors they were on when the defrost was on. New truck has heated powerscope/power fold with spotlights and I have no heated mirror button that I'm aware of, but when my defrosters are on and it's snowing they stay ice-free and clean...what does your button look like and where is it?
The button for the rear window defroster, also turns on the heated mirrors. The older trucks always had heat on. When you are on defrost, or max heat, they will switch on automatically along with the defrost as well. I have had a few times where the front of my truck would ice up, when the snow and splash of slush would stick amd block the whole front including headlights and driving lights. While the fronts of the mirrors ice up pretty bad, no issues with the mirrors themselves frosting up. The reason it's set up this way is so they do shut off because the dirty water on a heated mirror eventually you can't see a thing it boomers so grimy, bpversus the water running off. It's all in the manual but there are nuggets of the above all over. I know because I looked and because I am on my second winter.
OK---it looks like 100% operator error! I was driving down the freeway when turning on the "heated mirror switch". Now that I look closer --it was actually the side mirror light switchs---duh!!. It appears I should have turned on the rear window heater -- as Mhoefer stated above. I did have the defrost on high heat and that was not doing the trick. But hey --now I know what to turn on--and not to turn on --thanks!
