can anyone confirm that the axle code 42 is a conventional non posi traction 4.10 gear 8.8 axle, and if this is something i would want to regear my truck with, also the explorer its coming from is a 4x4 , i know i have to re gear both diffs in my truck but is the explorers front gears even the same?

The rear axle isn't a Dana 44, it's a Ford 8.8" So no, they don't use the same gears as a Dana 44 TTB.

Alrighty thanks for the clarification on that , I know all ford f150 and Broncos got the ford 8.8 rear ends and the Dana 44ttb fronts. However what I don't know is what the ford explorers used in their fronts. I ve heard they are Dana 35s is this true

Okay thanks for the clarification . Basically it means that I will still have source the front locker to match the rear axle gears ,does it have to be the same style of diff or can I use two different ones like a ls/pt or do they both have to be ls or posi

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? A little more info on what your wanting to do would help.

My idea is main idea is to steal the disk brake setup and convert my truck over to them. Currie enterprise makes custom rotors. I figured will I was on there I may as well grab the posi 4:10 gears for a later swap. It being a 4*4 I know I ll have to swap out the front gears in the ttb axle too. But maybe I ll just take the gears out and sell them to someone with a mustang

This is a true statement for the models years in this forum. But not for the ‘80-86 trucks. The earlier models used the Ford 9”.

What gears do you have in your truck now? You can swap the 4.10 gears in the rear, but for the front you will need the gears and a new carrier for a 3.92 and lower gearset since the Dana 44 has a carrier break, so if you have 3.73 or higher (numericly lower) gears now you will need to siwitch carriers in the front to put 4.10 gears in.

No need (and often no desire) to have the same type of differential in both axles.

Also I'm not sure I know what you mean by "pt". I'd assume you mean Positraction, but that's just the Eaton name for their limited slip (used mostly in GM vehicles).

There are other options beyond just open or factory limited slip diffs. If you're regearing it might be worth digging into those options, because possibly the biggest expense of a diff swap is getting the gears set up.
