Plastic ball in gas tank

I dropped my tank to replace the fuel pump and found this plastic ball in the tank. Does this serve a purpose? I'm thinking someone tried to fix the old sending unit that probably had a flooded float by attaching this to the arm and it came off.

Ha! I must have dislodged it when trying to siphon the tank. I ended up using the generator pump to drain most of the tank. Thanks.

No problem. That's what's nice about these type of forums. Someone usually has some idea.
