How can I install a rear tailgate handle back up camera
I have a 2004 Ford F250 Super Duty Pick up Harley Davidson Edition with a V10. I just bought a back up camera that is installed in the rear tailgate handle. it has all the parts and harness to include a tailgate handle with the back up camera which is included. I just like to know if anyone has installed one of these and if so, can they give me a detailed way to install this camera. thank you.
My truck is a 2016 xlt. First I mounted the rear camera. I had to take the access panel of the tailgate to remove the old handle. Take the lock out of the old handle and install it in the new handle. It is a simple swap. The hardest part about installing the new camera for me was fishing the wiring through the tailgate. The tailgate has baffles inside of it, so it's kind of a maze to get through. I used a 3/8" vinyl hose, I had laying around and fished that through the tailgate first. That took me about a half an hour. i tried to the left of the Ford emblem first with no luck then tried it to the right and got lucky. Then I taped the wires to the hose and pulled them through. Then I mounted the handle and put the access panel back on.
I grounded the camera to the frame above the receiver hitch somewhere using a self tapping screw. And decided to have the remote power wire turn on with reverse rather than a switch. So I spliced and soldered that wire to the center pin wire on the seven pin trailer connector. That center wire controls the reverse lights for your trailer.
I routed the RCA cable using zip ties carefully along the frame toward my driver side floorboard. I put a small hole in one of the removable rubber grommets and ran the RCA cable through the floor board under the carpet, then up under and into the dash to my Kenwood touchscreen receiver that I installed at the same time. I also wrapped the RCA cable with a couple wraps of electrical tape whenever it touch any sharp edges on the frame to protect the cable.
I also disconnected the guide lines on the camera by, I think, connecting the two small green wires that was part of the harness that came with the camera. The guide lines were off center because the way the camera is offset in the handle. so to me they were useless.
