I had a rental F150 with the console shifter. I can say I prefer 'on the tree'. With the console shifter, you lose half the cup holders / The storage bin, and it makes accessing the USB ports in the covered storage a pain.
Well I know that when I'm not towing it's nice to use the transmission (and engine brake) rather then traditional brakes. Really is that simple. I know I know yer just a proud SD owner. What about FORD PASS. You against starting your rig on a cold February morning as your plane is landing. Another option that the SD will likely have next year. The new SD rollout will likely follow the other ford products. Just my opinion and prediction.
It's called an exhaust brake, not an engine brake. Two different animals. Just an F.Y.I.
Maybe Ford could add it as a Limited only option on the Super Duty's to help separate them from the Platinums..
When this thread came out I was a year away from ordering and not knowing what I was ordering so I forgot about it..
I did order a 2020 Limited, and having the option on the limited would be nice.
Actually it would be nice if the Limited Super Duty had some of the Explorer Platinum options.
I'd like to see the rotary **** shifter, see no need for the column shifter, it's mostly electric anyway.
And while they are at it:
The electric parking brake
The brake hold at stops
And my favorite of our Explorer, intelligent adaptive cruise control.
The intelligent lane keeping assist if it would stop the 450 from wandering so much.
All I gotta say, is F that shifter cable! The F150's is too long...by about a foot...and the retaining clip on the transmission end is wrong. I got mine held in place with a hose clamp around the bracket. I got it shoved up in there, but I can't quite use 1st gear because it binds up a little. But I can use the +\- to achieve the same thing.
Coming from an F-150 I can say my opinion is the center console shifter is a totally pointless waste of space. Ford should use a column shifter or push buttons on the dash. There is no reason with modern technology to have a console shifter. The autofold shifter they gave the 2021 F-150s is an even more stupid complicated solution for something that should not be there in the first place. I mean seriously, the 1990s called, they want their shifter back.
One of the best things about going from an F-150 to an F-250 was getting rid of the console shifter.

If you think the console shifter is a waste of space....I'd hate to see what you think of the whole console itself! Talk about a waste of space for some cupholders and a couple charging ports.

The F150 shifter cable is too long. When I did mine, it has a big bend to it...and the grommet at the firewall is at a strained angle. I've kept an eye on the grommet and it's still doing it's job.
The retaining clip on mine fit the transmission end the same as the original cable. And I have no binding in any gear.
It's one of my favorite mods and completely reversible if I decide to sell the truck and get no takers wanting the console shifter.

Do you know the part number of the cable you used?

Sorry, looked for the email for the cable, but didn't see it. Took a couple pics of the cable installed, but didn't see a part# tag on it...not under the truck anyway.
I was able to use the original bracket/retaining clip at the transmission. It was a little tricky removing it from the original cable...seemed easy to break.
And a pic of the cable loop coming out of the firewall and the angle at the grommet.
