'75 360 Questions

One of my pickups is a '75 F250 SuperCab with 360 and automatic that is basically a utility truck for use around my property. It has a factory rebuilt short block, not sure by whom other than the tags on it indicate a professional job. Recently the cam went out and I learned a lot about modern engine oil (gotta use a zinc additive nowadays for these older engines). While I was that far into it decided to pull the heads as it has always had exhaust leaks on the right side. Valves are sunk, no seats, so off to the shop for a head rebuild. I put a Crane 343902 cam kit in it and a roller timing set.

Questions:

Will the stock valves springs work with this cam (.501 & .533 lift)

The right exhaust manifold basically crumbled when I took it off. I have heard these engines suffer from lack of exhaust, would a dual exhaust be worth the investment? Considering the use I really don't want to invest in headers.

Would a clutch fan be helpful, and it so, where to get one?

Are fan shrouds available?

Should I keep the EGR valve? I have heard the early ones like this had problems.

Anything else I should do to help with mileage for this engine (I know, 360 and mileage don't go together).

One of the big leaks was the valve covers. I have made sure they are flat, can I skip the gasket and use the Right Stuff to seal them to the heeds?

Answers:

No, the stock valve springs will NOT work with that lift - they'll coil bind > 0.480" lift....I'n not sure of the exact number but it might even be less with your 360.

Any thing you can do to improve the breathing on an engine is an improvement. Your call.

Clutch fan - for the use you suggested - fiddlin' and diddlin' around the yard, never seeing more than ....30 (?) MPH....a clutch fan is (my opinion) **** on a bull hog.

Yes, shrouds are avavilable - bone yard, aftermarket places = FleaBay, LMC, etc.

EGR - Personally, I woud dump the EGR....but that means getting a new intake, no?

Improved mileage on an FE....HAHAHAHAHAHA......no, seriously....HAHAHAHAHA.....a good tuneup, ignition timing and carb tune yield the best rewards.

TransDapt makes aluminum spacers, 2 barrel, 1/2 and1 inch thick. They are non-egr.

Thanks! I ordered the Trans-Dapt spacer, and the opinions fit with what I thought and are appreciated. This pickup does see some road time however is still mostly a utility truck. There is a lot of winter moisture where I am at (Western Oregon) and I got tired of the points corroding if it sat so as part of this I added a Pertronix distributor. Re mileage, my other one is a '75 highboy that I used to run a 427 with Tri-Power and consistently got 15 MPG with manual trans, stock gearing, and tire diameter.

1973/76 F100/350 360/390: TWO different fan shrouds, TWO different radiator supports.

The radiator support used with the Super Cooling radiator has a larger opening radius.

Super Cooling radiator measures approx. 26 1/4" wide x 24 11/16" high, has a HUGE top tank.

It's wider and deeper than the standard/xtra cooling and A/C radiators that measure approx: 26 1/4" wide x 19 3/4" high.

C7TZ-8146-B .. Super Cooling Radiator Fan Shroud / Reproduced by Carpenter.

1967 F100/350 352; 1968/76 F100/350 360/390.
--------------------------------------------------------
D3TZ-8146-C (replaced C8TZ-8146-K) .. Fan Shroud-Use with standard/xtra cooling and A/C radiators. Not used with Super Cooling radiator / Edit: Reproduced by Carpenter

1968/76 F100/350 360/390 / Carpenter was out, but now has this fan shroud in stock.

No!
The EGR valve bolts to the EGR/Carb spacer plate. Use a spacer plate without the valve, problem solved.

Thanks Bill. The carb spacer I ordered looks like it will cover the exhaust port in the manifold, some I had around here did not. Looks like I have the standard radiator, Filthy Beast suggested LMC and they have the shroud I need.

Yes, but several months ago, it said in red below: Out Of Stock.

I didn't look to verify if this is the case now.

And, I'd be very leery of LMC's applications, because their catalog is rife with errors and omissions!

But, if Carpenter now has stock, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if LMC is buying it there.

LMC is a 'middle-man' operation, makes their money using the J. Paul Getty method. Despite all the parts listed in their catalogs, they have next to none of it.

So, when you send in your order, they use your money to buy the parts elsewhere, jacking up the price and shipping charges.

Tha cam may also break your rocker shafts. For the stated use, something well under 0.050 is indicated. With that cam and appropriate springs, you;ll need aftermarket rocker stands that support the ends of the rocker shaft. The stock config has the hanging out in mid air.

Bill, Thanks again, I will order direct from Carpenter.
Frank, Thanks for the tip, you have me worried now as the cam is installed. It is the one Crane recommended for my application, and they made no mention of rocker concerns. I have ordered a set of their 96801-16 springs to use with this cam.

Here's a recent case of rocker shaft breakage reported here on FTE:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ft-broken.html
Note the lift of his cam. He purchased new and stronger rocker shaft stands to address the issue.

I agree about not buying from LMC, repackaged or not...just trying to offer up some after market vendors as a "fer instance".

I, too, stay away from LMC if at all possible. Some people have had good experiences with them.....

Completely fergot about Carpenter. Please excuse the brain fart.
