I have done a little research on ways to help my F 250 to get better gas mileage. I don't expect a big jump in mileage. But here is what I have come up with, and wanted to know if anyone here has done the same and what the results were?
My truck is a 76 F250 with a 390 2 barrel, 4 speed trans ( I don't know which one) 4.10 rear gear,tires 33x12.5R16.5
What I planned.
1.factory 4 barrel intake and 600 cfm Edelbrock carb
2.Dura spark 2 dist to replace the points dist.
3.new timing gear and chain set.
4.Electric Fan for the rad.
5.GM Alternator conversion.
6.Dual exhaust.

Reason: I forgot one thing.
I have a similar set-up as well, not awful on gas if a go light on the skinny pedal (but that's hard to do!) I do a lot of around town driving, I have also noticed that the higher octane seems to last better? maybe its just my imagination?
Pretty much what i get too, i average around 9mpg, 87 octane just hit $3.59/gal here today so the old girl doesn't see as much road time as she used to.
I think when I get my engine pulled to do rebuild it I might try to see if they have a economy cam or at the very least get a cam that has more torque than HP.
the only thing I can add is my 460 is being rebuilt as we speak, and my builder said the pre-72 'straight up' timing set will bring my torque down in the rpm range AND give me slightly better mileage-- he also said I'll still easily pass CA smog.. no downside- and cheap! Maybe there's a similar cam timing alteration issue with pre/post smog 390's(?)...
I get about 9 mpg with a 2 barrel and true duals. I think I made a big mistake on getting headers too. If you go to duals I would say maybe stick with manifolds, but that is just my opinion. I slightly regret my header upgrade. Gas is $3.40/gallon here.

I need to find a a set of exhaust manifolds for my truck if I can find them.
