Just got a hyper tech programmer and tried plugging in. Says the original owner must return his back to stock before the programmer is used on another vehicle. No way to contact original owner. How do I bypass this?
You bought a tuner that is married to another vehicle you will have to contact hypertech to see if they can unlock it you will probably have to send it back for it to be done. That being said hypertech is not the best tuning option for any ford vehicle.

I used to be in a circle of street racers when I lived in SC. I have seen HT programmers fuzz ECU's and lock up. I have never been impressed with their tunes or customer service. Granted, this has been several years ago, so I am not knowledgeable on the present line of programmers and tunes that they offer.
I currently have 5 Star tunes on my truck and am very pleased with the performance, options and customer service.
If Hyper Tech will unlock the programmer for you, it'll probably cost you somewhere around $150. Also, don't be surprised if they simply won't do it, as the service for which they were paid (the first guy buying the programmer) has already been used. Lesson learned to never buy a used programmer.

didn’t buy it. Had it given to me so I already had some suspicions. Figured it was worth a shot.

Ah, okay, it's good that you didn't pay anything for it. You should be able to at least use it as an OBDII scanner to check and clear DTCs. I'm not terribly familiar with Hyper Tech programmers, but you may also be able to use it as a data logging device. Those functions are independent of the programming protocols, so they should still be accessible despite the fact that the programmer is married to another vehicle.

In general, I am not a fan of canned tunes; I prefer to spend just a little extra and have a reputable shop or dealer make a custom tune for the application in question. Most places that provide this service also provide free tunes for future modifications to the vehicle. I'm not familiar with 5 Star and my truck is factory tuned, but I have tuned my Mustang several times as it has changed over the years. My shop/supplier, Brenspeed, sold me a tuner years ago with a custom tune set up for my specific vehicle. Now, whenever I add something to the car that I purchased through them, they simply update the tune and email it out to me. They'll also do custom dyno tuning if I were to bring the car in, which many custom tuners will do as well.
I can't speak for HT, as I don't have any experience with them, but SCT makes an excellent tuner. I have found the SCT 3 to be extremely reliable and useful. The SCT 4 has been out for a couple years, but I've never had my hands on one.
I've got and SCT 3 tune on my 2003 T-Bird. It was used as a starting point. Took the car to a speed shop, bought the tuner and 4 hours of dyno time. The difference was stunning. Haven't done anything to the truck. I've got the extended warranty. I know you can load the stock tune before you take it to Ford. Just makes me nervous that they'll know someone was screwing around.
