Lightbar questions

For those that have done some lights in the rear of the truck, what are you using for wire to run from the upfitter wires to the back? Are you getting some 12 AWG marine grade wire for it or something else?

Also, anybody with a 2018 put the ZRoadZ 12" lightbar in the lower bumper where the license plate goes using their bracket? Their website doesn't show it for a 2018 so I asked them and they said they haven't gotten a 2018 in yet to try it.

The gauge of wire you need is going to vary based upon how many amps your lights draw and how long the wire run is. I wired up LED strobes to my headache rack in the rear (probably about 16-feet) and used 14-gauge wire. But the strobes draw very little current. I also used a fairly standard grade of coated wire which I ran in the split-shell automotive style harness that I zip-tied to the factory harness. Keep in mind 4 of the upfitters can supply 25A and 2 can supply 40A. Here is a chart that might help you with gauge selection:

I like Trover's chart, and it is important to match the wire to the load. It gets a little deceptive, though, when the currents get small. If you are just putting some simple LED backup lights in, they draw less than an amp. No way do you need even 14ga wire for one amp. I run dual Rough Country 6-LED lights for backup lights and tapped the normal supply right off the truck's reverse lights (which I think are 18ga). I think 14ga is more than sufficient for peace of mind and a significant safety factor for a modern LED light, though 18ga would be just fine. Here's a chart with a little more resolution in the lower current area.
