So I picked up an 86 F350. Its got a 460 and what I assume is a c6. I got it running and tried to drive it. The carb is still a little screwy. But when I put it in D, nothing happens until you press the throttle down, then it just shifts into 2nd or 3rd and kills the truck. When you put it in 1, shifts instantly and you can begin to drive. Put it in 2 and it shifts sometimes. If you slow down enough it comes out of gear, then you press the throttle and it shifts when it hits a higher RPM. I was just wondering if it has to do with the carb still being screwy or could it be a vacuum leak? Anything helps at this point.
Yes, if the fluid is very dark or brown, changing it can do wonders. I have also had these transmissions mess up if the kick down rod was inadvertently activated all the time.
Usually you have a large yellow rod that goes down to the trans and it has a linkage at the carb that activates it only when you floor the gas pedal. See if all this moves freely and wants to go to it's home position. If it's hung up, I have had it cause shifting problems.
