With the money I had saved for the roller conversion I purchased a used set of Trick Flow twisted wedge 170 heads with 2.02 intake and 1.90 exhaust valves and a 61cc combustion chamber completed with 1.6 ratio Trick Flow roller rockers and 3/8 studs with 5/16 pushrod guide plates. I am sending the engine down to Charlie Philips at Lone Star Machine Shop in FairField, Texas to be built. Looking for about 10:1 compression with a .060 over bore and either hyper or forged pistons. I would Like to do a small shot of nitrouse in the future.
I think you'll be limited to Trickflow's pistons with those heads, not to mention the cam too, I'm assuming the same cam ? Make sure they inspect the lifter bottoms and verify they rotate freely in the bores.

Trick Flow does seem to have some affordable forged pistons offered in flat top and dished. Since they are relieved for their twisted wedge heads those will more than likely be chose. Yes, the cam is still the Comp 280H grind. Any estimates on power number? My guess maybe 320 hp?

I think the heads are an awesome move! But IMHO, I do think the flat tappet cam is the wrong way to go. I know you got it warrantied which made the choice easier. Earlier, you mentioned Howards. Howards lifters are made by Morel which is a division of Callies. Morel makes the best link bar lifter out there. Something that might ease that transition is looking for a used roller cam. A lot of the Mustang guys will use the Trick Flow cams over a Ford letter cam. You might be able to check over on Corral.net in the 5.0/5.8 engine parts classified section to see if they have something of interest to you.

That's probably too much cam for this application. If you stick with the series of Trick Flow cams, I wouldn't go over the Stage 2.

What are you putting this in and what do you want out of it ? Looks to me like you're building a high rpm screamer for a farm truck. Also, What intake and carb are you planning on running ? If this is going in a steet driven truck, it's going to be VERY disappointing until you hit 4000 rpms.

Truck is a weekend cruiser and will see some track time. It is a 1980 F100 2wd Long bed with a 3/5 drop. Trans is a World class T5 out of an SN95. 8.8 rear end with full spool and 4:10 gears. Running and Edlebrock RPM Air Gap intake. Have an MSD 6A ignition and Pro Billet distributor. Haven't completely decided on a carb or size yet. Will be running forged pistons for a small shot of spray in the future. Going to use ARP hardware in the bottom end. Shooting for 10:1 compression and 93 octane pump gas.

Nice truck. I was thinkin you were putting all this on a 302. I went back and refreshed what you were doing. . Are those new Coopers ? Last set I bought (235/70 and 275/60) were crap. Both 275's came apart, the first sitting in the carport the day after they were mounted. The second came apart a week or two later. The 235's were out of round so bad that I had to replace both in a few months time. I've run these tires for thirty years (Hercules, Coopers and Mastercraft ) and they were fine until that last set I bought 5 years ago. Never again. I switched to BFG radial T/A's and they were not much better. I've since gone to Kuhmo and Toyos. Don't know where they're made but all the others are "Hecho in Mexico"

Cam suggestion

i am using a Comp Cams 512 lift 220 duration cam and it’s building CRAZY power from 2,000-6,000 RPM then kinda falls on its face. But, thats the RPM range I want for my “sleeper” build anyway so I LOVE this cam!!! Its a Extreme Energy camshaft. I also have the “sewing machine chatter” and am running 1.7 roller rockers. The chatter doesn’t bother me much as the sweet sounding 3” exhaust with flomaster 40’s hides that sound (unless the hoods open) so you don’t even notice it. At the end of the day I call it a WIN.
