The problem presented as a small vibration at 80. Then after a couple weeks a small cricket like squeak when throttling up or letting off accelerator. At this point we thought it was the carrier bearing. The noise was definitely coming from that area. Then came a clunk when going into reverse and drive, similar to a dry slip joint.
Problem was the front u-joint. Switched it out and everything is quiet and vibration free. Carrier bearing and other two u-joints are fine. Greased slip joint generously.
Thank you. When it first presented you would have sworn it was a tire issue. Then with the cricket/squeak sound we knew for sure it was a carrier bearing due to the fact the sound was coming from the dead center of the truck, and the sound was similar to the sound of a failing bearing. Then the clunk sound presented when we would put it in drive or reverse, so we set up a camera underneath and filmed the u-joints. Hard to believe but we could actually see and hear the front u-joint failing. Technology is good!
