I am installing the brake shoes on the 57 9" that I am putting in my 54. There is a small spring that was on on side of the parking brake arm inside the shoes that I forgot to put back on - is it necessary? It doesn't look like its doing much, but I'll bet its there for a reason. I just don't want to take every thing off to put it back on.
Next, shouldn't the drum (new one from NAPA) go back on pretty loose with the star adjuster all the way in? Mine is pretty tight and I don't know if it will loosen up as I drive it.
For the money I've spent, I wish I'd gone out and bought an Explorer rear with discs!
Hmm...i dont know about that swap but i have a question though...what yr explorer rear end with disc brakes work for swapping...i have a problem with my original rearend and the aod is like something is holding it back so i want to exchange the rearend with disc brakes from an updated ford...give me some goody ideas...
We have a Pull-a-Part yard here in Memphis that I think I could have picked up an Explorer rear for about what I have in the 9". I don't know which might fit, but I was looking for 1.) something around 61" wide and 2.) had a bolt diameter that I could have matched up with a disc kit on the front.
I have a Galaxie, and that little spring broke apart on it. I was riding around for months, and every time I hit a bump I would hear a little rattle. I looked, shook, and wiggle everything trying to find that rattle. Turns out that the arm spanning the shoes would jiggle around without that spring to keep it tight.
I finally took it back apart and put those springs in. Mine broke as well. I just pulled them apart some more and put them on. It's amazing how easy some things get the more you do it! Now I don't know how long they are going to last. And I dont see replacements anywhere.
