Rear End Problems

Welp had an issue with gear noise on the new truck. Took it into dealer and snapped some pics. Axle is the Dana M300. Will report on the results soon.

Tech said carrier literally fell out of housing indicating little to no preload. Evidence shows skewed bearing roller path on both carrier bearing races.
Pinion had too much preload. Rollers had some scars and uneven wear patterns.

Funny...I'm having a similar problem. I just got the truck last month (used with 22K on it...it's an early build). I kept hearing a high pitch whine between 65 and 70. They have ordered a new ring and pinion for it (which is on backorder).

This truck whined at all speeds coast and decel. Late 17 build. Is yours a dually also?

Also according to the tech Ford makes you buy an entire gearset just to get the crush sleeve. Dumb.

My job 2 17 F-350 has made gear whine from the day I picked it up. The whine seems to peak at 70 mph. It’s a dually with the Dana M300 4.10 gears and posi. I’ll have to see if my local dealership is competent to do this type of repair.

Man that sounds terrible that the carrier just dropped out with no preload. You probably had excessive backlash and the gear contact pattern was variable depending on load and coast cycles.
My trucks gear noise is first noticeable around 65, then get louder and peaks at 70. By 75 is smooth and quiet. That’s sucks that these new trucks are having rear diff issues. Could be that Dana has quality control issues and or this Dana M300 isn’t a proven design yet. I think we’re the guinne pigs starting with the 17 super duty’s. I’m not even sure my local dealer has the experience level to tackle setting up a ring and pinion properly. Waiting to hear more news about your fix. Good luck.

More than likely you’ll need a new ring and pinion as the orig set is worn due to improper final assembly/setup. If they reuse the old ring and pinion, you’ll probably have gear noise again.

I wouldn't doubt you have the same issue that I had. Good call on making sure the tech knows what he's doing. The good news is these rear ends are a lot easier to set up than the older Danas. They have preload adjusters on the carrier like the coveted Ford 9'' rears.

The dealer just finished the rear end and I just picked up the truck about an hour ago. He says he hasn't had any axle issues come in with the 2017 SD's besides my truck. He did use a fresh gear set.

Silent as can be now, no other ill effects. Total time in the shop about 1 week, mostly due to ordering the new parts. Install took a few hours.

Here's the service record. The backlash wasn't too bad. Part numbers are below but the gear set is for 4.30 ratio.

Yes, .008 backlash isn’t all that bad but no case preload is. That’s great that you got all new parts! Sounds like they fixed it. Did you notice a big difference in noise?

I believe that’s the first time I’ve ever seen a picture on any M300 internals. Parts look pretty stout. I don’t think there is a strength issue with these rear diffs! Was your a factory limited slip? If so, did it have coil type preload springs on the clutch packs?

Yes, Limited slip, it does use the typical clutch pack. I believe the springs are wave design, not coil.

Cool, thanks for the update.

You’re not too far from where I grew up in Apple Valley/Desert Knolls area. It was a virtual paradise for us kids back in the 70’s and 80’s riding dirt bikes everywhere. Not many people lived there back then and everyone seemed to get along better with more open space between them. Sure miss those days.

Yep, times change. Adelanto and Victorville are getting worse. Apple Valley still has a sense of civility though. Luckily in Phelan we have a rural ordinance, no property is to be smaller than 2.5 acres.

Good luck on your whine issue, hope it gets fixed correctly and promptly.
