I hooked it up...what the heck, it’s a flathead, not an INDY RACER
not FORD O MATIC
WHOOPS, I should have said LOAD - O - MATIC, I got to thinking that except for the lack of exhaust and air cleaner this is, to my knowledge, a stock flathead. A vacuum advance would work just as well as anything and would prevent me from having to remember another gizmo.
I also realized that there is a priming circuit like any other Zenith-Bendix carb I worked on. Harley calls this an “accelerator pump”.
I watched the whole video. With co-workers wondering what the hell I was so entertained about with engine noise. To heck with them.
I didn't see any smoke or hear tappets clacking. Ran pretty smooth to me. A touch rich? maybe not. I wonder if the minor backfire would exist if the engine had a real load applied.
Thanks for the lunch break music John.
There must be an engine-less '51 F1 out there somewhere wanting that 226.

Tom,
My internal combustion IQ is a bit rusty, but the backfire might be cold air rushing up into the manifold when I back off the throttle.
I am in full flathead fever, gotta stop running it until I get some tires on the ground...glad you appreciate a little flattie music, your waterpump is the heartbeat!
