2014 f150 FX4 crew cab. Rear dome lights come on when i open the front doors but NOT when i open the rear door. really annoying. switch is on door. bulbs work when front doors are open. any ideas?
I'll bet it's because you have broken wires in the wire loom inside the rubber sheath between the door and the B-pillar. Common issue on these trucks.
My buddy just opened his up to fix a "door ajar" light that wouldn't go off, and said that he actually found multiple stretched or broken wires in there. They didn't pull enough slack out of the loom at the factory for some reason.
Should be able to just pop the rubber boot out of the B-pillar, and also out of the door so you can slide it around and visually inspect the wires. I haven't done it myself, just heard of it done many times, so I'm not certain if the door panel needs to be removed to do the repair or not.
Another thing to keep in mind is each door has an independent trigger wire which tells the BCM (I assume) that that specific door is open. I just installed AMP-Research Power-Boards & I had to tap into each one of those trigger wires. Those are located behind the kick panel on the front passenger floorboard, behind/above that Fuse-Box. With that being said, I'd assume (without going outside to look) that those trigger wires may also be Fuse'd.
UPDATE!
quickly checked out the wires as stated above.. the passenger side door looked worn but no obvious sign of broken wires.. the new development is when either rear door is opened it does NOT show ‘door ajar’ on screen. Is this a fuse problem now?
Possibly. Or a switch that's stuck open which would be unlikely. There's a fuse panel on the passenger side front kick panel, and another under the hood.
No, it never was since those switch circuits aren't fused.
If the problem was a broken or open wire, the symptom would be the opposite - the lights wouldn't turn off. Scratch that idea. For this to be a wiring concern would require that both rear door ajar switch's wiring to be shorted to ground - while not impossible, that's not very likely (based on provided information).
I don't have the 2014 F150 EVTM (the 2014 F140 is inexplicably missing from my 2014 service DVD) but I have the 2013 version. If the circuits didn't change, then the attachment should apply. If someone has the 2014 version, please cross-check to verify applicability (or not).
Another thing to keep in mind is each door has an independent trigger wire which tells the BCM (I assume) that that specific door is open.
This is correct. It is also worth noting that the front and rear courtesy lights are wired in parallel so they should both be on or off.
It would probably be appropriate to ask the OP about the history of the truck, including any repair work or other activity coincidental to the onset of this symptom or if this symptom has been present all along. It's always possible that the BCM is either misconfigured or is incorrect. Also, is the OP set up to use a scan tool or equivalent to interrogate the BCM about its state in reading the door switch PIDs?
