Crazy Question

okay, being new to Ford and even newer to restoration (this is my first project), I have to ask a crazy question for my sanity. What is the difference between the 1966 F100 Styleside and Step Side?

The box. Ford used the terms Styleside and Flareside. The blue truck is a Flareside and the red and white truck is a Styleside. All pics stolen from the net.

This is a Flareside (stepside)<br/>

This Mercury is a Styleside

I'm 65 and the first time I ever heard the term flare side was here on this forum, they were always step sides to everyone I hung with.

It's a technicality for sure. As we all now know on this forum Step Side is simply a Chevrolet term. Most terms used when talking classic cars/trucks can be traced back to Chevrolet. This includes Posi rearend. To add to the confusion GMC used the terms Wide Side and Fender Side while Dodge/Fargo called it Sweptline and Utiline. It's all in a name but I like to remind the world that more than Chevrolet exists.

When Stylesides were introduced in 1957, Ford began calling the other bed a Flareside.

Stepside is really more of a generic term, even if chevy used it. Any single wheel pickup with that style bed. Only on this forum do people get their shorts in a wad and dog pile people for calling a Ford a stepside.

Exactly my point. Terms have become so generic that no one remembers they are Chevrolet. Small block/Big Block...Chev only not even Pontiac, Olds or Buick used those terms. Now all Ford engines are actually Chev 350 small blocks All with a grain of salt...

So Bill, since I was only 6 when the Stylesides came out, I’m curious what Ford called the Flaresides before that. Probably they were all just pickups, since only one type of bed was offered. Did I just answer my own question?

But what if it's a Flareside that identifies as a Stepside?

In a 1947 Ford Truck publication that I've read part of they referred to what we might call running boards as "Flareboards". Number 8 in the list.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.
