First off rent, or borrow a transmission jack and chain the trans to the jack for yer own safety. The rest is straight forward. I always drop the trans with the converter. There should be a converter drain plug accessible through the small inspection cover-the same place where the converter nuts are removed. I use a remote starter control to blip the engine to gain access to the next nut and so on. I would also drain that trans before removal as the dip stick tube will usually have to be removed from the trans before dropping. You should be able to fit a wine cork in the hole for it in the trans case. Once the trans and converter are drawn away from the engine block you can take a strand of mechanics wire and wire a converter stud to the manual linkage shaft to prevent the converter to slip off the trans input and stator shaft should it occur and in a trans removal stuff can go wrong in a hurry.. Always handy if you have a helper.Especially to help lift that heavy hunk into a pickup bed or teardown table. Crank that trans jack up as high as it will go and save yer backs. Since yer rig will be down for awhile getting the trans rebuilt, you may have time for some other cursory things like checking yer rear drive diff for oil level or drain and refill. Brakes and such.
I ran a bolt into one of the starter tapped holes, but I put a combo wrench on it with the angle bent towards the converter, this held the converter on while I moved the trans
