Wheel stud replacement

Had three wheel studs break on my 07 Expedition. What is the best way to replace them? The replacement studs are cheap. Hope the actual labor isn't to difficult.

With a large hammer and a punch knock the broken studs in until they fall out. Then work a new stud into place, use a spacer over the threads (thick washers) but leave some threads showing. Then install a lug nut on the stud and tighten it until the new stud is pulled all the way into place. Lube the stud hole and stud threads with WD-40 to help the installation go a easier.

If the hub is old you might want to think about replacing it since it will come with new studs installed. No sense changing the studs if you're going to be changing the hub soon anyways. Just a thought.

OK guys. Need more help. I got the brake caliper and rotor off. Then I see a plate behind the caliper that the actual studs go into. It looked like it was held on by the axle bolt. So I took it off and it still won't budge. I feel like I have to take that plate off because I don't have enough room behind it to get the old studs out and the new ones in. What do I do next guys?

You don't have to take that plate off, besides I doubt you can without a hydraulic press. Just try knocking one of the studs in, you'll see that once it's loose you'll be able to angle it to get it out and in.

Did you try turning the axle to a different position where the backplate might have a low spot?

There really isn't a low spot. I can look again. But it's pretty right all the way around.

Maybe you have to remove the brake shoes so you can get enough angle behind the plate. The stud is designed to go in this way, you just have to find the position that works.
