351w connecting rods

I'm working on rebuilding a 1996 351w for my F250 and my problem is that I lost track of which cylinder each rod came from. I will be installing new pistons along with all new bearings so I don't see it being that big of a deal but now I'm second guessing myself. I checked the side of rod where the cap connects and it looks like I have letters stamped in and not cylinder numbers like I thought. These letters also seems random, I have A, B, I, X, Z....etc etc. So will I either be ok with them being in the wrong hole as long as they are oriented correctly or am I in trouble in which case, how can I tell where they belong?

As long as you keep the caps/rods together as they were, you're good.

I've never heard of that with Ford engines before. Was this engine previously rebuilt or dismantled?

You can put any rod in any hole. What does matter is which way the bearing tangs in the rod are pointing. If the rod bores check out ok, within .0002" taper or out of round, the size of the bore can vary as much as .001 and still be acceptable so write down the exact size of every rod, that way if you get into some bearing clearance problems you can move the rods around to where you might need them to get or loose some clearance.

Ford stamped connecting rods on the faces where the rod and caps mated together with the cylinder numbers. Sometimes these can be faint and hard to read before cleaning. Numbered sides faced outwards on the bank they were installed in. The chamfered side of the rod journals faced the crank fillet (side radius)
