The truck starts fine if it is cool. I can start it then turn it off and it starts again fine. If I let it idle and heat up then turn the it OFF. I can not get it to start back up until it cools back down.
It has spark and I have gotten it to start by spraying gasoline or starter fluid into the air intake. It kicks a little but does start up eventually. I have replaced the Ignition module, Throttle position sensor, oil temp sensor and the coolant sensor. I have checked all ground wires and cleaned all wire connectors under the hood including the ignition and computer / brain wire connectors in the cab. The engine runs fine and will run for as long as I want with no noticable issues. Until I shut it off and try to restart.
Is there a sensor that will not enguage the injectors if it is too hot at start up but works fine "HOT" if the engine is already running?
If it was a bad battery it wouldn't turn over at all. I have seen this problem with a bad fuel pump, won't start hot after you shut it off, but if you say you can spray gas in the intake and it starts and keeps running that may rule out the fuel pump. Probably should check the fuel pressure both hot and cold and see what ya got.
um not a dead battery but if it's going bad, my stock one just wore out not to long ago at 125k miles....would start up fine in the morning, but after driving around and shutting it off to like fill up for gas and then go to start it again it would struggle and finally got to the point where it just wouldn't starts at all when warm.
It's not the battery. With the starting issue I decided to go buy a NEW battery. Here are some details.....
After installing:
1.The fuel pumps sound louder
2.EEC relay was bad (Replaced)
When HOT it:
1.Gets Spark
2.Gets fuel to injector rail
3.Starts if GAS is sprayed into the air intake
Tested or Replaced-®:
•Inertia switch
•Battery ®
•Oil temp sensor ®
•Coolant temp sensor ®
•Ignition module ®
•Throttle position sensor ®
•Rotor ®
•Cleaned all electrical connectors under hood and near computer module
•Checked fuel filter (New about 400 miles ago)
The starter was replaced about a year ago and not used for 1/2 of that due to the engine not running.
The starter works great. If I put gas into the air intake it starts up.
OK I have NOT used the fuel pressure guage yet to see if it is a fuel pressure issue. The reason is, I do not have a fuel pressure guage and don't want to spend the $$$ quite yet because......
It has pressure with no issues when I first start it and when it is running and the more I mess with this I keep leaning towards it NOT being an issue when it is HOT. Lately it happens even if the engine has only ran for 1-2 minutes when cold. I can always restart after it has sit for 10-15 minutes. I will eventually test the fuel pressure.
My next question is... can this issue be caused by a bad catalytic converter?
No, I wouldn't think so. Cats usually give symptoms like loss of power, not no starts. To check your cat you can hook up a vacuum gage, run it up to about 2000 rpm and watch the gage. If it looses vacuum it could indicate a restricted exhaust. I don't think this is where your problem lies but it won't hurt to check it. Of course I don't really like this test because if you are short fuel pressure it will also drop your vacuum.
"so i have a 92 bronco 302 with an msd6offroad ignition, msdblaster2 coil, a K&N FIPK, bosch platinum +4 plugs, accel8.8mm wires, a bosch 02 sensor, a helix bore throttle body, new IAC valve solenoid, new egr valve sensor, stock exhaust manifold, and a pacesetter turbo muffler exhaust.
my first problem is a high indle in neutral and park. the car will start as high as 2000rpm when cold and will not go below 1450rpm regardless of engine temp. when in gear with brakes on it idles at around 900rpm.
my other problem occurs intermittently, usually when the engine is still warm. i will start the motor succesfully and it will die after about 4-10 seconds of running. immediately after attempts to start wil just keep cranking. the motor will usually start after a minimum of 20-30 mins. sometimes when i have this hot start engine stall it will diesel after it has died for a while or until i turn the ignition to the off position.
i have asked countless people/mechanics and nobody really seems to know what it is. does anybody out there have similar problems on their modified 302 with bank fire speed/density eec-iv? "
ive only gotten a few reccomendations:
check TPS readings
change plugs
change coil
im wondering if my msd box has something to do with this.
i have a 92 f150 that will just crank when it is hot (most of the time) but will start again if i shut it off wait about 5 seconds and crank again and starts right up and it idls a little rough when it is really hot outside and the engine has been running for a while. Idls high when cold outside for about a minute then about 700 rpm.
it would be curious to find out what exactly isnt getting voltage /gas/spark when hot. i am tired and probaly getting stupid but, would a bad power connection at the solenoid on the fender do anything b/c the starter draws more amps? doubt it but having two solenoids sounds crazier enough to me.
monkei, my Bronco was doing the vary same thing. Idle was way up there. I changed the TPS and that fixed my problem. You should definately check yours.
