I am working on the harness as a temporary fix...After messing with splicing the wires with crimp and solder with heat shrink butt connectors I noticed my VGT solenoid plug was cracked and the VGT sensor where the plug slides in is also cracked and brittle from heat (hence negative boost readings). I ordered a new VGT solenoid, pigtail and crank sensor while I was at it because my codes all cleared except the Crank Position code. There is oil around the sensor so I want to replace it too. I think this might be part of my issue but I’m also trying to decide which method I want for fuel pressure monitoring.
I have 2 gauges in my truck... 1 Liquid filled gauge mounted right to the regulator.. the other is electric one into the cab.. i didnt like the idea of bringing fuel line into the truck.. especially after the mess an oil pressure line made when it snapped at the back of the gauge..
When i had my engine apart for a head gasket job during the reassemble i found out that where the harness split off to the VGT solenoid the wires were BARE inside the plastic wire protector sheathing.. someone in the past wrapped them together with electrical tape trying to hide it.. i kept having problems with intermittent no boost response on accel.. I cut the wires solders on new pieces covering the section in heat shrink then wrapped and recovered.. havent had that problem since..
So I got my VGT solenoid and pigtail in today and they sent the wrong one. I ordered a Garrett VGT Solenoid for 2003-2007 6.0 Powerstroke and it is bigger than the one I triedto take out. Part # 792593-0001. How the hell is this the wrong part? I called the local Ford dealership and the guy was sarcastic when I asked what part number I should have bought. He said I should have bought the Ford part not aftermarket...why would a Garrett turbo with a Garrett VGT Solenoid be replaced with a Motorcraft solenoid? He said he could order one for $411. Are these guys smoking crack?
I’m checking fuel pressure tomorrow with a manual gauge until my dash gauge comes in. So I stuck the old solenoid back in and wired up the pigtail with the blue wire closest to the cab (to the left) and now I get a few new codes:
(if you don't have them already - VGT Solenoid pig tail - 6E7Z-12A690-DA; VGT solenoid (all years) - 5C3Z-6F089-BA)
No I bought the solenoid off Amazon. I figured if it was a Garrett part for a Garrett turbo it wasn’t just some Chinese knockoff junk and it would fit. Why would the VGT solenoid be a Motorcraft part when the stock part that is in there has Garrett stamped on it? The pigtail fits the old solenoid. My truck is an early ‘03 so lots of parts are different from the newer ones. My VIN is 1FMSU43P73EB44001

i would get the proper Garrett part from Riffraff that is cheaper than amazon anyway. That way you have a reputable shop that you can actually call rather than something like amazon where you don’t know what you are getting or from who, or if they even have a clue what they are selling or what it fits. There is a reason these small specialized shops are so highly regarded, it’s because they work on this stuff everyday and aren’t just hocking a part for a quick margin.
I installed a new liquid filled 160psi gauge on the fuel test port and KOEO is 60psi and running 58-60psi. Looking at my HPOP/ICP it is 800 at idle and 1500 at 3000rpm just revving up in the driveway. Under load I remember the pressure being a lot higher...I just installed an Adrenaline HPOP not too long ago and have not had any issues. I guess I need to run more tests and see what else is suspect.
I cleared my codes and ran another scan and now I’m only getting the Crank Position Sensor code.
simply revving the engine does not put a sufficient load on the system to check fuel pressure... you need to see what its doing with the drive gears engaged and taking off hard... thats where youll get a true loaded test from..

I wish it would take off hard. I can’t even hit the accelerator in gear and it surges.
OH!!! Gotcha! I see that in your sig (am slow tonight)!!
Whatcha think about the GPCM (from the codes)?
I removed the GPCM bracket and GPCM to get some slack in my harness to check for chafing yesterday and have not bolted it back down. I’m guessing it needs to be bolted to the valve cover to get ground? That code only came up after I unbolted it.
I really don't think that it needs to be bolted down to avoid those codes. I think you have something wrong there (electrically). Maybe the harness came unplugged or was loose?
