Just wait Dave. When you get to go for a longer drive you will see how fun it is and want to at least avoid making other drivers mad.

I think at 60mph it was 3500rpms..... not positive, though. In my 6 hour trip on Tuesday it did not over heat at all.
OK, I'm home.

Here is my estimated rpms for my 55 F350 with 31.5" tall tires and the optional 5.83 rear axle. At 50 mph, 2965 rpms, at 55 mph, 3262 rpms, at 60 mph, 3558 rpms.

My 54 F100 with 27.5" tall tires with the stock 3.92 rear axle. 50 mph, 2395 rpms, 55 mph, 2634 rpms, 60 mph, 2874 rpms, at 65 mph, 3171 rpms.

What do you think, guys? Too many rpms for my 55 at 60 mph? Too many for my 54 at 65mph?

Abe, I’d say your ideal cruising RPM would be close to 2500. Your F350 Should be almost maxed out at 3558.
I think Joe wants to try to cut down on cab noise and heat.

While I love driving my 56 I’m old enough I wanna be able to hear my music and Garmin.

Thanks for the advice, BJ. My F350 can and has gone faster although just for a short time, just to see what it could do. Around town and locally, like going to the dump or getting mulch, I don't go faster than 50.

Don't want to hijack this, Joe. Anyone else want to chip in?

Good discussion. I would love to hear other opinions on acceptable cruising rpm's for our Y-blocks. You aren't really hijacking because all if this is good info for a rear ratio discussion.

Well now you have me googling.

It seems many think 3000 rpm is fine. 2700 is said to be max torque. 3200 to 3500 seem to be OK. But I would love to hear from our experts.

Those of us running the T98 brings other issues in this decision making. With our transmission ration of 6.40, 3.09, 1.69, 1.00 it is a little more difficult. 1st to 2nd is a big jump. No matter what rear I get, I don't think I will use 1st much.

Wife: What are you doing?
Me: Researching ideal engine rpm's and rear gear ratio for cruising speed.

Wives! My wife and I are watching Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda on ID. He's investing a murder outside a auto parts store in broad daylight. He thinks the victim was driving a 70s Dodge charger. Joe Kenda says he likes cars in his 45 years of marriage he's had 57 cars. When his wife complains about his love of cars he said he could be into whiskey and women! My wife laughs and I say to her, aren't you glad I'm into old Ford trucks!

Abe, this is a very good show, I've watched every episode, some several times. When there was a two day marathon recently, I entered the 5 grand giveaway, but didn't win.

New shows on Wednesday night @ 10PM

I have a line on 3 axles. One is a 67, the other a 63, and the third I think is between a 61 and 66. It has no grill, so I can't tell, but the hood looks to be that range.
Anyone know what gear ratios were on those year of trucks? I'm gonna start digging.
I'm heading there Monday. I have a buddy on the Missouri chapter forum that is checking things out for me. He is going to try to see if there are tags on any of them.
Here is the unknown year truck.

JOe, That truck is a unibody truck, so 1961? I wasn't aware that Ford built 3/4 ton unibodies.

I found this 56 NOS tach on Facebook. The tach has 3500 rpm's in the Operating Range, which to me would mean the safe range. Now these tachs were for Big Jobs. Does that make a difference? They had Y-blocks also, only bigger ones.
