My tail lights had a shrink wrap type rubber thing around the bulb socket and wires as they exit the bulb socket. This wrap is almost obliterated and I am really trying to avoid paying $90 for replacement fixtures that are new just for this one little problem.
Anybody have any ideas on what type of material I could use that would actually stand up to the sun and weather? Heat shrink is really not meant for extended/constant UV presence.
Not to mention, there really doesn't appear to be a heat shrink material that starts out large enough diameter to cover the bulb socket, but shrink small enough to house only three 16-gauge wires....
Heavy walled marine grade heat shrink tubing will work just fine for that. It even has waterproof adhesive goo inside. I have used RTV and shrinked over it. Works great.
Ultra-high shrink, heat shrink tubing will do the job. Heat shrink is available up a 8:1 shrink ratio, a 1" ID tubing at a 8:1 sharing ratio will shrink down to 0.125"or 1/8" ID but you are not going to buy it from your local auto parts store.
You need something like Raychems HRHT (High Ratio Heat-Shrink Tubing) It comes in a 19MM ID unshrunk /3MM ID shrunk. That should do the trick for ya.
